Dubai is stepping on the gas when it comes to electric vehicles (EVs)! The city is taking a major leap towards a sustainable future by installing charging stations right where you park your car. This exciting initiative, a joint effort between the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) and Parkin, Dubai’s leading provider of paid parking, promises a seamless and convenient experience for EV owners.
Imagine this: you pull into a paid parking zone in Dubai, but instead of just finding a spot, you can also plug in your electric car and recharge it while you’re out and about. That’s the future Dewa and Parkin are creating with strategically placed “Green Charger” stations in prime parking locations across the emirate.
This move couldn’t come at a better time. Dubai is witnessing a surge in EV adoption, with the number of electric vehicles surpassing 30,000 by the end of April 2024. With more and more people choosing EVs for their eco-friendly benefits, having easy access to charging becomes crucial.
“We see our parking facilities playing a vital role in supporting the switch to electric vehicles,” Parkin stated, acknowledging the growing popularity of EVs. Their extensive network of parking spaces, conveniently located throughout Dubai, will now offer drivers the ability to charge their EVs while they’re parked. This not only makes owning an EV more convenient but also removes a potential hurdle for those considering making the switch.
The addition of charging stations aligns perfectly with Parkin’s growth strategy. It presents a valuable opportunity to expand their services and cater to the evolving needs of Dubai’s residents. With over 197,000 parking spaces under their management, this collaboration significantly bolsters Dubai’s EV infrastructure, making it easier than ever for residents to embrace sustainable transportation.
The Green Charger program, launched in 2015, boasts an impressive track record. Since its inception, it has powered EVs for a staggering combined distance of roughly 130 million kilometers. Charging your EV is a breeze too. Simply register your vehicle with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), and Dewa will create a Green Charger account for you, allowing you to charge your car within an hour. Even if you haven’t registered yet, a guest mode feature is available for you to top up your battery on the go.
This collaboration between Dewa and Parkin marks a significant stride towards a cleaner and greener Dubai. By providing readily available charging options in convenient locations, residents now have a compelling reason to consider switching to EVs. With every car plugged in, Dubai is taking a step forward towards a sustainable transportation future, reducing emissions and creating a healthier city for everyone.
