A team of undercover police officers in Dubai arrested a gang of four thieves who were targeting visitors at Dubai Mall.
The officers, dressed in civilian clothes, were deployed due to a rise in thefts at crowded spots like Dubai Mall. They mingled with the crowd to ensure the safety of visitors.
The gang members, aged 23, 28, 45, and 54, were caught in the act on March 6, 2024. They had planned the theft carefully, targeting a woman at the mall’s dancing fountain area. While one thief watched the victim, two others distracted her, and the fourth stole her mobile phone from her bag. They then split up to confuse the victim.
However, the police spotted the crime and arrested the thieves on the spot. Although the phone had been disposed of before the arrest, the gang was caught thanks to surveillance cameras.
In Dubai Criminal Court, it was proven that the defendants had formed a criminal group to steal from people in busy areas like shopping centers. The defendants denied the charges, but the court found them guilty. Each was sentenced to one month in prison and ordered to be deported.
