UAE Government Unites to Boost New Food and Water Technology Hub

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is taking a bold step towards securing its future food and water needs with the launch of AgriFood Growth & Water Abundance (AGWA), a groundbreaking new economic cluster in Abu Dhabi. This ambitious initiative aims to propel the UAE to the forefront of the global fight against food shortages and water scarcity.

AGWA signifies a powerful collaboration between federal regulators in the UAE. The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology, and the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment have joined forces to establish a steering committee. This committee will play a critical role in streamlining regulations and fostering a business-friendly environment for companies dedicated to developing solutions for these pressing global issues.

The global landscape for food and water security is undergoing a significant shift. With demand for sustainable solutions projected to skyrocket, reaching a staggering Dhs 77.4 trillion by 2045, the need for innovation is paramount. AGWA, spearheaded by the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development (ADDED) and the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), is strategically positioned to leverage the UAE’s strengths and transform Abu Dhabi into a global hub for cutting-edge food technologies and efficient water management systems.

This collaborative effort underscores the UAE’s unwavering commitment to addressing global challenges. AGWA is envisioned to be a cornerstone in advancing the National Food Security Strategy 2051 and UAE Water Security Strategy 2036. By nurturing a thriving ecosystem of innovation and attracting international partnerships, AGWA’s impact will extend far beyond the UAE, contributing significantly to global food and water security.

“This agreement exemplifies the UAE’s proactive approach to creating robust regulations and fostering synergies that are crucial for sustainable development,” remarked Ahmed Jasim Al Zaabi, chairman of ADDED. “AGWA has the potential to be a game-changer, significantly propelling our national food and water security strategies forward and solidifying the UAE’s position as a global leader in sustainable solutions.”

Leaders from all three ministries involved emphasized the importance and timeliness of this initiative. Suhail Mohamed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, stressed the critical need for collaboration to strengthen the UAE’s food and water systems against future environmental pressures. Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, highlighted the urgency of addressing food and water security challenges through technological advancements and innovation.

Beyond its strategic objectives, AGWA boasts significant economic potential. Projections estimate that by 2045, AGWA will contribute an additional Dhs90 billion to Abu Dhabi’s GDP, create a staggering 60,000 new jobs, and attract a massive Dhs128 billion in investments. This economic boom will not only benefit Abu Dhabi but also create a ripple effect throughout the UAE.

Adding further momentum to this exciting development are recent partnership announcements. Believer Meats, a company pioneering cultivated meat technology, has chosen Abu Dhabi as the location for its regional headquarters. This strategic move will support their operations in product development, manufacturing, and market expansion across the region. Additionally, NUOS, a leading Swiss company focused on alternative protein innovation, will also be setting up an innovation center and food manufacturing facilities in Abu Dhabi. These partnerships showcase the growing international interest in AGWA and its potential to revolutionize the global food and water landscape.

The launch of AGWA and these new partnerships mark a significant milestone for the UAE’s food and water security ambitions. By fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration, the UAE is well-positioned to become a global leader in addressing these critical challenges. AGWA stands as a testament to the UAE’s commitment to shaping a more secure and sustainable future, not just for its own citizens, but for the entire world.
