The Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) is taking a multi-pronged approach to tackle traffic congestion on two major arteries – Al Ittihad and Al Wahda roads. This initiative aims to ease the daily gridlock experienced by thousands of motorists, particularly during peak hours.
The SRTA’s strategy focuses on reducing the speed limit on these busy roads. Previously, drivers could cruise at speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour (km/h). Under the new regulations, the speed limit will be lowered to 80 km/h. This change applies to a specific 4.3-kilometer stretch, starting from the Al Taawun Bridge near the Dubai-Sharjah border and ending at the King Faisal Bridge.
This move echoes a similar speed reduction implemented last November on the route connecting Sharjah and Al Garhoud Bridge. It reflects the UAE’s broader commitment to finding solutions for traffic woes across the country. Dubai, for instance, is exploring flexible work arrangements to reduce congestion during peak hours, while the Ministry of Interior is studying the feasibility of a new federal highway connecting all seven emirates.
Sharjah isn’t stopping at just speed limits. The SRTA is embracing technology to address the traffic challenge head-on. Earlier this year, they announced the installation of a network of 48 intelligent traffic signals. These AI-powered systems are like traffic conductors on steroids! They use real-time traffic data collected from sensors and cameras to dynamically adjust signal timings. This data-driven approach can potentially increase traffic flow by up to 30%, getting you to your destination faster.
